The King's Rack
« Reply #1 on: December 09, 2005, 14:01:01 PM »
I'm looking for a photograph of the King's rack nearest to the end of her reign.

(From DDG-41 Decommmsioning Ceremony Booklet - 28 March 1991)

KING is known Navy-wide as "KING OF THE FLEET". This is evidenced by the many awards she has earned. In the Pacific she earned the Combat Action Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), the Vietnam Service Medal with one silver and one bronze star, the Republic of Vietnam Medal, and the Meritorious Unit Commendation. Upon her recommissioning and for her subsequent service in the Atlantic Fleet she earned a Meritorious Unit Commendtion, The Navy Unit Commendation, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation. KING made a clean sweep of all Battle Efficiency Awards, a feat accomplished by only three other Surface Force ships Navywide. The ship went nine for nine in departmental awards and also won the Battle Efficiency "E" for missile shooters in Destroyer Squadron TWO. KING has received the Chief of Naval Operations "Surface Ship Safety Award", the coveted MARJORIE STERRETT BATTLESHIP FUND AWARD as the top Cruiser/ Destroyer/ Frigate in the Atlantic Fleet, and for her sustained outstanding performance at sea and ashore, KING was awarded the first ever "TOP HAND" Award from Commander, Sixth Fleet, as the outstanding deployed unit.
