During my tour of Shore Duty in Newport, RI, I was living in Navy Housing which overlooked the Destroyer Piers on the Naval Station. In the winter I would watch ships come in from the North Atlantic that looked like Ice Castles, every surface, cable, antenna, life line was sheathed in ice with about a foot of ice on the weather decks. I had to work on these ships and in one instance, I got to within about 200 feet of the gangway and noticed that me hat had frozen to my forehead. You ask why I live in Florida?

Mark, that photo was taken in 1931 aboard the USS Langley CV-1, I also have a photo of holystoning.

Pretty close! We did 3 (maybe 4) trips above the Arctic Circle during my time aboard. It was interesting, but scraping ice was no fun at all!

Cold weather and ice also brought a whole new dimension to UNREPS.

In my research I found that CDR Layman (XO '65 - '66) went on to command the Joseph Strauss (DDG-16). His XO was LCDR Richard Tarbuck (King CO '71 to '73).
