Unfortunately, that tradition ended when wood planking on ships ended.
The Navy used to take wooden planks from ships that were decommissioned and hold them for historical use and for distribution to plank owners, but there were no provisions once the planking ran out.
They also never made provisions for a substitute on ships that didn't have any wooden planking such as the KING.
Various items were supposed to have been shipped to the Naval Historical Center (such as the ship's bell) when she was decommissioned, but we have verified that they do not have these items and that they are considered lost government property.
The USN decommissioning policies and procedures no longer allow the removal of items for distribution to veterans. I'm not exactly sure when this policy went into effect, but it was before the KING was decommissioned.
In a nutshell, there is virtually nothing left of the KING.

I'm a Plankowner and was talking to other plankowners and was told that when your ship in no longer in service you can get a plank is this true and if so how does a guy go about getting it.
